Day 12 - Lindau, Germany

Yesterday we intended to go on a little day trip to Lindau, but Henry was not on form! So we ditched that idea and stayed in the lodge for most of rhe day.

Today everyone was feeling much happier so we escaped Centre Parcs and drove to Lindau, on the edge of Lake Constance which was only 30 minutes away.

The first car park we tried had loads of space for campervans. It was supposed to be a Park and Ride, but there was no evidence of any bus stop and it was a 30 minute walk into Lindau centre so we ditched that and tried a car park that was apparently not motor home friendly, but was right in the centre.  Thankfully we were early enough thst there were plenty of spaces to pick from and a few other vans in the car park, so we risked it.

We went for a short walk over the bridge onto Lindau Island. What a cute place! It felt like a German version of a quaint sea side town with lots of old buildings and unique shops.

We were all pretty chilly so went for coffee and cake (and a toilet stop!)
We then found a Christmas market that was far classier than the Birmingham Christmas Market! They even had a little outdoor play area with wooden play houses, a slide and this cute wooden tractor.
After a little stroll and a turn on the merry go round we went for lunch. The restaurant was unexpectedly fancy! Table cloths, lamps on tables and well dressd waiters. Henry was very well behaved and earnt a packet of Haribo from the waitress when we left. On the walk back, hos smile also earnt hom some santa chocolates from the waiter outside an Indian restaurant 😃.

Most of the shops in Lindau had their own Christmas tree outside and every one was decorated with a variety of handmade ornaments.

Lake Constance

Lindau Harbour with the huge lion statue and lighthouse.

Back at Centre Parcs we decided to go out for dinner as the fridge was empty, ready to leave tomorrow. We opted for the buffet again but Henry just wanted the yogurt that they have at the buffet breakfast 😂. We did manage to find some pasta and ice cream instead. The all you can eat and drink is a great idea if you don't have a toddler that has had enough after 40 minutes. There's only so much wine you can drink in 40 mins!

I'm nw sat in the laundry room again, making sure Andrew has enough clean pants for the next week/10 days. What a way to spend a Friday night 🙄.

Tomorrow we leave Germany and go to the ski hotel in Italy.

Thoughts from today:
 > Lindau is really pretty. It would be amazing in summer.
 > English German Markets are so tacky compared to the German Christmas Markets.
 > Having a kitchen has made life much easier with a toddler - how easy is it going to be when we're in a hotel?
 > How do we still have so much life admin to do 🤷. Every evening seems to be filled with admin - changing our address on various things, searching right move, emails etc etc.

Day 1 - Bromsgrove, UK to Bailleul, France

The first family trip in the campervan! A quick pit stop at the supermarket and then onto Le Shuttle. Henry was excited to "catch the train!"  We arrived at the campsite in Bailleul just as it was getting dark we picked somewhere only an hour from Calais in case Henry had had enough at that point. The campsite was called Camping de la Ferme des Saule and it had an amazing farm shop on site which was still open.   Dinner was a bit of a fail. We forgot to test (or rather didn't have time and didn't even think to test) if our camping pots and pans worked on an induction hob - they didn't 🤦. Thankfully we'd bought some over-priced Gouda from the farm shop and rummaged for some crackers, carrots and hummus in the fridge to go with it. Thoughts from today:  > Henry did great at sitting still for most of the day. And adapting to being inside tje campervan for a long time. > Feeling a bit homesick. Definitely not missing the ...

The last supper

The last supper - a pizza picnic with a glass of champagne.  Zero pans, hardly any washing up and no need to pack the bottle of champagne 😂.   The camera doesn't lie - those tired faces are very real!  It had been a very long week that week and that night was about to get longer... The night before (Wednesday) our immediate neighbours were burgled and their 2 cars stolen.  On this evening they returned from the pub to find their back door wide open and the stolen handbag strewn across the floor.  Feeling very spooked, they came to ours with their three pyjama-clad kids in tow.  That then quickly turned into an impromptu sleepover, turning our lounge into a make-shift hostel.  So no more packing happened after this photo 🤦‍♀️.

The backstory

So what made us want to travel?  Where are we going?  What about your stuff?  What's happening to your house? How long are you going for? What about school?  These are all questions we've been asked and we only know the answer to a few of them! Rewind 2 1/2 years to Easter 2022.  We'd just moved into what we thought was a lovely but slightly too big house.  We never wanted a big house but assumed with a baby on the way, we'd grow into it.  It needed a complete renovation and I was 7 months pregnant.  Not the best combination! With Andrew working tirelessly on renovating the house and juggling work, and me suffering from serious post natal depression we quickly realised the size of the house and ongoing maintenance needed due to the age of the house was not for us.  Think of the stressed out couples you see on Grand Designs - we were fully living that nightmare.  All of our time was consumed with work, renovations, house maintenance...
